DJ Lag has taken gqom to as far as India, where he kicked started his world tour which he’s still doing.

INTERNATIONALLY-ACCLAIMED DJ and producer DJ Lag has done the unthinkable - mixing gqom and grime.

Grime is a popular sub-category of rap that originates from the UK. The DJ, whose real name is Lwazi Asanda Gwala, mixed it with gqom and came up with his new song titled Bulldozer featuring UK artist, Novelist.

DJ Lag (27) from Clermont in KZN spoke to Daily Sun about the making of the song.

"Whenever I'm in London, there's always one or two MCs that take a microphone and rap on top of gqom on my set. And that always sounds interesting, and it made me want to work with some grime musicians. I finally met someone who knew a grime artist and connected me to Novelist.

"We then got into the studio. As I was producing the beat, he was busy writing the lyrics. By the time I was done with the beat, he was also done with the lyrics and we recorded. Just like that, Bulldozer was created," he said.

DJ Lag has taken gqom to as far as India, where he kicked started his world tour which he's still doing.

"The tour started in February in Mumbai, India. Then I went to other cities such as Toronto, Delhi Brooklyn, Atlanta, Geneva and many others. Next, I'm going to the UK, then I return to the USA.

"I'm amazed, really amazed by how much gqom has gone across the world. I started going to Mumbai in 2019 for one festival and people enjoyed the set. The people who booked me then booked me again this year. I've gone to a lot of countries and it's beautiful to see how much people love our music. I'm blessed to be able to take this music this far," he said.

The DJ's also working on a new project.

"As I'm busy with the world tour. For every country I go to, I plan on working with artists there. The plan is to release an EP with all those songs. Plus, my annual event, Something For Clarmont, is coming in December," he said.
