"We had to close ourselves inside the houses. He was alone on the streets with a gun, searching for his girlfriend. The aunt was killed at a local spaza shop after she told the deceased suspect that she didn't know his girlfriend's whereabouts.

"We're traumatised. People have witnessed a horrific incident of a former cop being stoned to death," said a 36-year-old community member who asked not to be named.

Family spokesman Qenemuze Mphuthi, who is also a brother to the deceased girlfriend, said the incident broke their hearts.

"We can't say community members did well by taking the law into their own hands regarding the terrible nature of this situation. We're extremely traumatised. This is the first incident of this nature in our families. My sister left a child behind," Qenemuze said.

During Daily Sun's visit to the village, family members were busy cleaning the pool of blood where the former cop was brutalised.

Ward councillor, Nthati Mokoena called on the provincial Department of Social Development to send social workers to provide psychological support for the affected families and the community.

"The incident has terrified the whole village. We hope the presence of social workers will assist," he said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said the gun belonging to the former cop had disappeared during the mob attack.

Mophiring said the formal identification of the deceased is on Monday, 4 March, and their names will be released.

"A firearm suspected to be used in the commission of crime is still missing. Three cases of murder are under investigation."
