WHEN Mandla Sibeko was diagnosed with diabetes last year, he was shattered.
However, he was advised by doctors and diabetic patients that it was not the end of the road.
Mandla (53) has learned what types of foods he must eat for his condition and the importance of exercise.
Last year, he vowed to live a positive life and promote a healthy lifestyle and founded the Mandla-Wethu Chronic Support Group in KwaThema, Ekurhuleni.
On Thursday, 12 September, his organisation, in partnership with JM Brothers Funeral Service, hosted a diabetes awareness 5km fun walk in Duduza, Ekurhuleni.
"I hosted the event to promote a healthy lifestyle for people living with diabetes. Exercise is important, that's why I decided to incorporate the fun walk into the event," Mandla said.

Ruth Chokwe (85), who was using a walking stick, was one of the participants in the fun run.

"The event will help me exercise and walk despite using a walking stick. There are a lot of benefits from walking. This will lower my risk of high-blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. It will also strengthen my bones and muscles," Ruth said.
Hluphe Mnguni (63) said monitoring blood sugar is important for people living with diabetes.

"The event helps us exercise and keep high blood low. Living with diabetes shouldn't stop you from doing any kind of work," said Hluphe.
Simphiwe Mavimbela (61), who was diagnosed with diabetes in 2020, said it's crucial to eat healthy food.
"Whether you suffer Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, making the right food choices is an important way to keep your blood glucose at the right level. I visit a dietitian once a month and this has helped me understand my health," Simphiwe said.
