THE CITY of Cape Town has raised fresh concerns about the increasing number of road accidents involving luxury sports cars.

This follows a collision on Monday, 26 May in the Cape Town CBD where a yellow Porsche collided with a taxi.

The driver of the Porsche was arrested on the scene for driving under the influence of alcohol, with a breathalyser reading of 0.52mg/1000ml, more than double the legal limit of 0.24mg/1000ml.

Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) for Safety and Security, Jean-Pierre "JP" Smith, condemned the incident, saying it reflects a troubling pattern.

"This is but the latest incident involving luxury sports cars in recent months, and certainly not a good start to the week."

"The fact that the driver was arrested early in the morning and with an alcohol reading of more than double the legal limit makes this offence even more alarming," he said.

"The motor vehicle accident could have had serious consequences, with innocent passengers sustaining injuries. Our enforcement agencies will not tolerate lawlessness and will continue to arrest suspects who break the law. We all have a responsibility to contribute towards a safer road environment," he said.

According to Smith, Cape Town traffic officers recorded 36,351 offences in the past week alone.

They also executed 1 251 warrants of arrest, impounded 179 public transport vehicles, and made 26 arrests, 23 of which were for drunk driving.

This incident is part of a growing list of high-speed sports car crashes in the city. On 1 March, a McLaren 570S coupe crashed on High Level Road in the Sea Point/Fresnaye area.

The car hit the pavement at high speed.

The driver and passenger were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The car is valued at about R3 million.

Earlier, in February 2025, a far more tragic incident occurred when Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo, a dental surgeon, was struck and killed by a drunk Ferrari driver in Cape Town.

The Ferrari ploughed into pedestrians, killing Dr Mdlokolo at the scene.
