Man shot outside court

MAN shot outside court.

A 43-year-old man was gunned down outside the Athlone Magistrates Court in Cape Town on Monday, 3 February after he had just attended a court case.

It's alleged that four gunmen charged towards the man when he walked out of the court and shot him. A witness who works close to the crime scene said several gunshots went off.

"More than 10 gunshots went off. I could tell from the sound that he was shot with different guns. They really wanted him dead and indeed they killed him," said the witness.

Another witness believes the killing is gang related.

"The people who came to the scene were saying he was from the American gang, so a rival group could have gunned him down. Gangs have been killing each other lately. Even the one who was shot outside Brackenfell cop shop last week was a gang leader," said the witness.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said cops are hunting for the killers.

"Athlone SAPS detectives are still on the scene at Lower Klipfontein Road combing the area for clues where a 43-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded.

"According to preliminary reports, the victim was sitting on the pavement at the mentioned address, opposite the Athlone Magistrates Court. An unidentified man walked up to him and fired several gunshots. He died on the scene," said Van Wyk.

He said Athlone police registered a murder case for investigation.

"The motive for this incident forms part of police investigations. The suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested," he said.
