IT WAS chaos at the soon-to-be-opened Etwatwa Crossing Mall on Monday, 8 June, as thousands of desperate job-seekers fought to submit their CVs.

With youth unemployment at a staggering 45,6%, more than 4,7 million young people are left stranded at home.

The promise of employment drew hundreds to the mall, where they pushed and shoved for a chance at a better life.

Security guards and cops had to be called in to calm the situation as applicants fought to reach just three boxes meant for CV collection.

A few people managed to hand in their CVs, but many were left disappointed when the boxes were taken away.

A disheartened graduate told Daily Sun she feels her dreams are slipping away.

"I graduated five years ago with a Human Resources qualification, but I'm still sitting at home doing nothing. I'm beginning to lose hope because I couldn't even drop my CV in the box today," she said.

Another disappointed job-seeker said he woke up early just to be first in line but walked away empty-handed.

"I'm heartbroken. I came early, but the boxes were removed before I could even get close."

The desperation on the ground mirrors the harsh reality of the country's economy, with the number of discouraged job-seekers skyrocketing to nearly 3,9 million.

The new mall, opening soon with 61 shops, offers a small glimmer of hope for locals.

Community liaison officer Dan Mofokeng said three boxes were filled on the first day of CV submissions.

He urged people to stay calm and assured those turned away that they hadn't missed out.

"Applicants still have time. The submission process will run until 19 June," said Mofokeng.

He added that competition is tough, with applicants from seven different wards, reaching as far as Delmas, all competing for the same limited jobs.
