THE Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo is calling for immediate action.

They urgently demand the release of the investigation report into the Bloemfontein athletics disaster.

This follows Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba's unfulfilled promise to publish findings regarding the withdrawal of Team Limpopo from the South African Schools Athletics Championship, held in Bloemfontein, Free State from Wednesday, 2 April to Sunday, 6 April.

The athletes reportedly endured severe hardships, including a lack of food and proper accommodation after enduring long hours of travel.

Some athletes and coaches were forced to sleep on buses overnight due to poor logistical planning, while others went the entire night without food.

On Friday, 11 April, Ramathuba apologised and committed to a detailed investigation, promising to release the report within a month.

DA's provincial sports, arts and culture spokesman, Advocate Franco Marx, said the deadline has passed, and no report has been made public.

The DA insists that the investigation report be made public immediately, emphasising the need for parents, teachers, and the residents of Limpopo to receive the truth, accountability, and substantial reform.

"Premier Ramathuba's own words acknowledged that this was not an isolated incident but a pattern of negligence. If the government is serious about accountability, it must act and be seen to act without delay," said the DA.

Marx said this silence is unacceptable and that they will submit formal follow-up questions to Sports Arts and Culture MEC Jerry Maseko and Education MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, demanding confirmation on the completion of the investigation.

"They must provide reasons for the delayed release of the report, disciplinary actions taken and a clear deadline for its public release."

He said during the portfolio committee meeting held on Tuesday, 6 May, he personally reminded MEC Maseko of this commitment and requested clarity on the status of the investigation.

"Despite this, no feedback has been forthcoming, and the report remains concealed."

Limpopo government spokesman Ndavhe Ramakuela said the report hasn't been concluded.

"Preliminary reports have shown that an in-depth detail is required to look at the historical issues related to this, or whether external investigative bodies may be required," he said.

Ramakuela noted that it will take longer than the original date set, and no new deadline has been established.
