A mum fears for her grade 10 daughter who missed the June exams after she was allegedly assaulted.

A MUM is worried about her child who has missed the June exams after she was allegedly assaulted at school.

It's alleged the grade 10 pupil from a high school in Newlands East, Durban, was beaten up along with her three friends at school. A video of them being assaulted while other pupils watch on circulated on social media since the incident happened on Thursday, 5 June.

Her mum from D Section in KwaMashu north of Durban said the incident has left her child traumatised and afraid to go to school.

"At this point, I think I should move her to another school. She doesn't feel safe going to this school anymore," she said.

The mum said she wants the Department of Education to intervene because even the principal has not done anything since the incident happened.

"This incident really disturbed my child, other kids are writing the June exams, but she is sitting at home just because of those kids who beat her up. I'm also hurt and wish this never happened. Those kids are not even showing remorse. When I went to the school with my child on Wednesday, 10 June, they were looking at us through windows, intimidating my daughter even more," she said.

KZN MEC for Education Sipho Hlomuka said the department has a zero-tolerance stance on school violence of any shape or form.

Hlomuka said these videos are accompanied by allegations of racial intolerance, which has no place in schools and society.

He said it must be noted that the department has launched a full investigation into this incident and perpetrators will be brought to book.

"Schools are safe havens, where teaching and learning should be our number one priority, jeopardising the safety of pupils, teachers and staff is a serious criminal offence, and we will act decisively to curb these incidents," said Hlomuka.

He said the department deeply regrets the bodily harm and emotional distress caused by this incident on the pupil and wishes them speedy recovery and healing.

KZN police spokeswoman Captain Ntathu Ndlovu confirmed that Newlands East police are investigating a case of common assault after an incident that reportedly happened outside a school on Thursday, 5 June 2025, where a fight allegedly broke out between pupils.

"Investigations into this case are ongoing," she said.
