EASTERN Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta is calling on communities to help police arrest the suspect involved in the brutal murder of a 102-year-old Butterworth gogo.
Nontsumoa Mbayimbayi was murdered on Wednesday, 2 July.
Fanta was speaking during a visit to the gogo's home on Monday, 7 July.
She described the act as heinous and called for action against those who continue to commit these crimes against women and kids.
Fanta said it's alleged that gogo Nontsumoa was first raped before she was murdered.
"The visit came in the wake of a horrific crime that has left the community in shock and mourning, raising concerns about the safety and protection of elderly citizens.
"I extended my heartfelt condolences to the grieving family, offering both emotional support and practical assistance from the Department of Social Development. The tragic incident has highlighted the vulnerability of the elderly in our communities, prompting discussions about how to better protect them," she said.
Fanta said she arrived at the family home and found a somber atmosphere, where relatives gathered to mourn the loss of their beloved matriarch.
"The elderly woman was described by family members as a pillar of strength and wisdom, cherished by all who knew her. She was the heart of the family, one of her grandkids expressed shock, with tears welling down their faces. Her loss is unimaginable," she said.
Khula Community Project spokesman Petros Majola said gogo's story has been doing the rounds on social media and they, together with the MEC, had to go and visit the family.
"The family is still in shock and all they want is justice," he said.
Police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa said police have launched a manhunt for the suspect responsible for the murder of the gogo at Bawa Location, outside Butterworth.
"The incident occurred during the night of 2 July 2025. According to the information, it's alleged that the 102-year-old elderly woman was sleeping in a separate room when her house was burgled into and a forced entry was noticed through the window," she said.
Mawisa said upon investigation on the morning of Thursday, 3 July, gogo's body was found with injuries to her upper body. She died on the scene.
"Police are investigating cases of murder, rape and burglary. No arrest has been made, however investigation is underway," said Mawisa.
She said the SAPS is appealing to anyone who may have information that could assist in the arrest of the suspect to contact the SAPS CrimeStop number on 08600 10111.
