Mastandi suspects the fire was a deliberate act of spite.

DEVASTATING fire rips through a five-room shack, tragically killing one tenant and injuring another.

Mastandi, Stevens Mashego, was set to move back into his shack this weekend after he gave his tenants two months' notice.

But now, he suspects the fire was a deliberate act of spite.

Stevens from Makause, Primrose, watched helplessly as his home was engulfed by flames, which he believes started in one of his tenants' rooms.

"I think whoever did it wanted to spite me and now a person has died," said a heartbroken Stevens.

He said his tenants weren't happy about moving out.

"I gave them two months to look for other places to lstay and was supposed to come back this weekend. But all of a sudden my shack burned, it can only point to one thing," he said.

The fire also impacted the community, with community leader, Nophelo Nogoda, confirming that around nine families were affected.

"We informed disaster management and blankets and food parcels will be supplied to the victims," said Nogoda.

The cause of the blaze is yet to be officially determined.

William Ntladi, spokesman for Ekurhuleni Emergency and Disaster Management, said police will investigate.

Police spokeswoman Captain Nelda Sekgobela said an inquest docket was opened at Primrose Police Station.

Meanwhile, Stevens appealed for help to rebuild his life and his home.

"All I need is building material," he said.
