"The walk was long and exciting."

ELDERLY people took to the streets of Katlehong to be part of a 6km walk.

The walk was hosted by Ponelopele Health Gym in partnership with other partners.

They started at Motsamai Clinic and walked around the different streets in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni as part of their routine to keep fit on Wednesday, 16 April.

Gogo Jumama Gwangwa (82) said she exercises to keep herself fit and healthy.

"Age doesn't count anymore, but health is the most crucial thing that one should pay attention to, especially as an elderly person," said Gwangwa.

Maria Raphulu (72) said she enjoyed the walk because she burnt a few calories.

"The walk was long and exciting.

"I enjoy keeping myself fit, and such initiatives are good because they enable us as old people to exercise and keep our bodies strong," Maria said.

Madi Rapodile (71) said that she prepared well for the walk.

"I went to the gym a lot before the walk because I was eager to complete it.

"I'm happy that I stayed energised during the walk, and I managed to complete it. My efforts at the gym paid off," she said.

Themba Lukhele, famously known as Skeem GP, who took part in the walk, said he participated in the walk to show support to the elderly people who prioritise fitness and health.

"I believe elderly people are senior citizens that we look up to, and to be involved in their activities is always a blessing to me.

"I consider myself a leader and I believe I have to always lead by example and being part of such empowering programmes always gives me the gratification and opportunity to lead by example," Themba said.

He said that he lost his mum recently, and he considers every elderly person as his parent.

"I wouldn't have missed this opportunity for anything else because I'm supporting people whom I consider as my parents. In our cultural customs as black people, we always look up to the elderly for direction in life," added Themba.

The coach of Ponelopele Health Gym, Phumulani Dlamini, said the 6km walk was hosted jointly by fitness gyms for the elderly in Kathorus and other partners to promote fitness.
