MOTORISTS are urged to brace for bumper-to-bumper traffic on major routes this weekend as the festive season draws to a close.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) warned that traffic volumes are expected to spike nationwide, with law enforcement officers maintaining high visibility on roads.
"Motorists must plan their trips carefully and allow enough time to reach their destinations," said the RTMC.
Drivers were strongly advised to avoid travelling at night, with the RTMC revealing that deadly crashes peak after sunset.
"Our data shows that 21% of fatal crashes occur between 7pm and 10pm, and a further 6% between midnight and 1am.
These are the hours when most head-on collisions happen, claiming many lives," the RTMC said.
Motorists were also urged to take regular breaks to avoid fatigue, with a stern warning that dangerous behaviour will not be tolerated.
"Speeding, drunk driving and reckless conduct will be dealt with decisively."

Public transport operators were not spared, with authorities calling on them to avoid overloading, ensure their permits are valid, and stop picking up or dropping off passengers at unsafe spots, which increases the risk of pedestrian crashes.
The RTMC revealed that enforcement operations have already yielded results.
"More than 4,700 public transport vehicles have been impounded for permit violations, while over 12,600 vehicles were discontinued for roadworthiness infringements," said the RTMC.
Motorists were also warned to keep a close eye on the weather forecast.
"Do not drive through storms or attempt to cross flooded bridges," said RTMC.
Drivers were reminded to reduce speed in rainy conditions, increase following distance, keep lights on, and slow down when driving through residential areas or pedestrian-dense zones.
The RTMC said road safety remains everyone's responsibility, urging motorists to make it home alive as the festive season comes to an end.
