THE incident on the notorious N8 between Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu in the Free State was a blessing in disguise for booze lovers on Tuesday, 17 October.

This is after a truck transporting booze to Bloemfontein crashed on the side roads after a distraction of heavy rains in the early hours of the morning.

Nearby residents of Botshabelo, Thaba Nchu and the surrounding farms went out in numbers to loot the fallen alcohol.

Christmas indeed came early for these residents as the helpless driver and his assistants couldn't do much but to look in despair as looters helped themselves.

"Leave us alone," one said.

Hillary Mophethe, spokeswoman for the Department of Community Safety, Roads and Transport, said no injuries and fatalities were reported on the crash.

She explained that the incident was not a collision but rather an unfortunate occurrence in which the truck lost control and crashed, causing a traffic jam due to broken bottles of booze scattered on the road.

"We call on motorists to drive with caution as a number of residents were still on the crime scene," she said.

Mophethe said authorities are preparing for a massive clean-up of the road to avoid unnecessary crashes.
