MAN killed in his yard.

Tsotsotso Maduna was cleaning his yard near the main road when a "drunk" teacher allegedly crashed through the fence and struck him with his car.

The incident happened at Namahadi Village in QwaQwa, Free State on Monday, 31 March.

According to Tsotsotso's family, the suspect was travelling at high speed when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Tsotsotso's yard, killing him instantly.

Tsotsotso's uncle, Tshenase said: "The trauma of what happened to our son will take time to heal. As the breadwinner, his sudden death has left a void in our lives. He leaves behind four kids who are now fatherless because of restlessness. This is a heartbreaking reality we must come to terms with."

Tsotsoso was a security guard at the University of Free State's QwaQwa campus.

His neighbour, Tlale Menyatso told Daily Sun he was asleep when he was woken up by a strange sound. He said the vehicle damaged his property, destroying the fence and washing line.

"We found lots of alcohol in the car," he said.

Resident Neo Mahao urged the municipality to take action and install speed humps where the tragedy occurred. He noted that eight residents were previously injured on the same road.

"We call on government to install speed humps to force motorists to slow down. The loss of our brother in such a horrific manner has left us shaken and terrified," he said.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring said: "The suspect was arrested at the crime scene and charged with culpable homicide and drunk and driving.

"We warn motorists that the police will increase visibility during the Easter holidays. Driving under the influence of alcohol is prohibited and offenders can face serious consequences, including fines and imprisonment."

He said the suspect is expected to appear in the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrates Court soon.
