"WE feel like bad luck is following us. We didn't even enjoy the festive season."
These words were uttered by Bongani Mashiane (21), who appeared in the Moretele Magistrates Court in Hammanskraal, together with his mum Agnes Mashiane (50) on Wednesday, 12 February.
The mum-and-son duo from Danhouse in Makapanstad, North West, appeared in court on assault charges.
Agnes and Bongani were arrested mid-December 2024 on different dates following Bongani's 21st birthday celebration at home on 30 November 2024.
They claimed they were arrested after trying to stop a fight outside their home.
"We're worried about this case as we're waiting for judgment and it's taking a toll on us financially," said Bongani.

Agnes claimed residents who opened the case against her and her son were the ones who came to the party at night uninvited.
"We're innocent. This is done by jealous residents, but they'll pay for what they did to me," she said.
Agnes insisted they are both innocent and didn't fight anyone.
"Being arrested with my son is traumatic."
Agnes claimed those invited to the party were the ones who allegedly beat up a boy for allegedly stealing a cellphone.
North West Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Sam Tselanyane stated: "An assault case was opened at Makapanstad Police Station and two people were arrested."
The case was remanded to 13 March 2025 for further investigation. Agnes and Bongani are out on R500 bail each.
