There were mixed emotions outside court between izangoma and the rape-accused sangoma's relatives

BAIL hearing for a sangoma accused of raping a 14-year-old initiate in Meyerton was postponed in the Vereeniging Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 21 May.

The 23-year-old gobela was arrested for the alleged rape of an initiate at his home in Meyerton.

There were mixed emotions outside court between izangoma and the rape-accused sangoma's relatives. Some of izangoma pleaded with the court not to grant the suspect bail.

Those supporting the sangoma claimed he was innocent, saying he was bewitched and couldn't have done it. They described him as a talented young sangoma.

His girlfriend, who is also a sangoma, told Daily Sun she still can't believe what her boyfriend is alleged to have done to the girl.

However, she thanked God for her suspicion that something was wrong with the girl.

"I confronted him. Initially he denied it. As days went by, I noticed their behaviour and came up with a plan to get the truth out. He finally confessed," she said.

The sangoma's arrest was made possible by his girlfriend's intervention, leading to his first court appearance in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday, 20 May.

The bail hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, 21 May but rescheduled for 28 May after his lawyers asked for time to study the case docket.
