GOGOS worldwide can now enjoy their favourite sport.

On Wednesday, 2 April, Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba officially launched the second edition of the Grannies International Football Tournament (GIFT).

The four-day tournament, hosted at Nkowankowa Stadium near Tzaneen, runs until Saturday, 5 April, when the champions will be crowned.

The event unites 22 gogos football teams from countries such as the USA, France, Kenya, Mozambique, Zambia, Togo, and Ghana, with teams from across Mzansi.

Breakers Football Club, representing the USA, will aim to defend their title, which they secured in March 2023.

This pioneering event is a collaborative effort between the provincial government and the Beka Ntsanwisi Foundation.

Dr Ramathuba expressed pride in hosting the tournament, highlighting how it promotes active ageing, encourages physical fitness, and fosters social cohesion and nation-building.

"This tournament is not just about soccer, it's about resilience, empowerment, and proving that age is no barrier to participation and excellence."

She said this is not just a sporting event but a celebration of old-age fitness and the belief that age should never be a limitation.

"It serves as a reminder that with determination and perseverance, we can continue to achieve greatness at any stage of life. Our grannies are role models for future generations, demonstrating that strength, passion, and teamwork remain relevant throughout life's journey," she said.

Ramathuba also urged the South African Football Association (Safa) to support female football.

"I'm calling on you, Danny Jordan, to support Banyana Banyana like you do with Bafana Bafana."

Speaking on behalf of GIFT founder Beka Ntsanwisi, Khensani Ntsanwisi said the aim is to bring together grannies through soccer.

"The tournament is to show the world that age is just a number. The tournament gives the gogos a chance to also enjoy themselves and have a good time. It also helps them to keep fit and live a healthy lifestyle. We believe the tournament will be a success, and we are grateful for the overwhelming support," she said.
