MASHASHANE community organised a clean-up campaign on Friday, 2 May.

The campaign formed part of Kgadi (Princess) Moshukutswane of the Mashashane Tribal Authority's birthday celebrations.

The campaign was conducted in Maune Village and Mashashane Clinic.

The Ga-Mashashane tribal area is located between Mokopane and Polokwane. It's under Kgoshi, Nkrosi Magadangele II's leadership.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Kgadi Mashukutswane, who is also the founder of the Kgadi Moshukutswane Foundation, said: "This campaign also aims to spread awareness about the importance of a clean environment and encourage communities to take pride in their surroundings."

Kgadi stated that they also seek to empower the youth through such initiatives to ensure they thrive.

"We know young people face numerous daily challenges, including substance abuse, unemployment and crime. Through such gatherings we seek to empower and help enable them to thrive in life."

Residents came out in numbers to participate in the clean-up campaign.

Joseph Magongoa (43) said: "We are glad we were able to lend a helping hand and be part of this campaign. We'd also like to call on everyone to stop littering. Our environment is dirty and we are to blame."

Another resident, Moshibudi Chokoe (38), said they still have a problem with people throwing diapers everywhere.

"We have a new challenge in our villages. People throw away diapers everywhere. When it rains, they spread everywhere. It's not good."

Residents could not be deterred by the cold weather.

"It's cold but we decided to come here because we understand the importance of keeping our environment clean. This is something we can do regularly," said Maphuthi Mashashane.
