WORKERS find newborn baby's body in plastic bag.
EPWP workers got the shock of their lives when they found the body of a newborn baby wrapped inside a plastic bag in Nyanga, Cape Town on Friday morning, 10 July 2026.
Heartbreaking discovery
The discovery was made at about 9am while the workers were cleaning near the corner of New Eisleben Road and Miller Street.
One of the workers said they couldn't believe what they had found.
"I was doing my work as usual, and I was shocked when I discovered that there was a baby in a bag. It was not a foetus. It was a baby.
"I suspect someone gave birth, killed the child and dumped it here. This is terrible and heartbreaking. How can a mother do such a thing?" said the worker.
The discovery left other EPWP workers emotional and angry. A worker said whoever was responsible should be brought to justice.

"She must face the consequences because this is clearly murder. God will deal with her, but I also want her to face the full might of the law," she said.
Police open inquest
Western Cape police spokeswoman Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that an inquest docket had been opened.
"Nyanga police opened an inquest docket following the discovery of the body of a newborn baby at the corner of New Eisleben Road and Miller Street in Nyanga on Friday morning, 10 July 2026," she said.
She said the body was found by cleaners who alerted police.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation."
Appeal to mothers in distress
The tragic incident comes as organisations continue to urge mums in distress not to abandon or harm their babies.
In a previous interview with the Daily Sun, Melanie Luus, from Inceba Projects, an organisation that assists vulnerable mums, encouraged women who feel they can't care for a newborn to use a baby saver instead of abandoning the child.
A baby saver is a secure structure built into a wall where mums can leave their babies anonymously so they can be cared for safely.
Luus said the organisation has received several babies through its baby savers across Cape Town.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the baby's death and are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
