TEACHERS in hot water.

This is after a pupil was allegedly assaulted by two teachers for failing to pay for a grade 12 school trip.

The pupil was allegedly assaulted because her mum could not afford to pay the money for the trip to Durban.

Khula Community Project spokesman Petros Majola said they reported the incident to the Department of Education and the school principal has been suspended as a result.

"The grade 12 pupil from Osborn Senior Secondary School in KwaBhaca, Eastern Cape, was allegedly assaulted by the principal and another teacher," he said.

"I still don't understand why teachers did not beat up the parent as the kid is expected to get money from the parent."

The Eastern Cape Department of Education said the incident was not only real but is part of a broader culture of illegal corporal punishment at the school.

Education Department's spokeswoman Vuyiseka Mboxela confirmed that the assault occurred at Osborn Senior Secondary School.

"The school also acknowledged that corporal punishment is still being practised at the school, despite it being outlawed.

"The pupil was targeted specifically for not having paid for a school trip and confirmed that two teachers currently employed at the school have been implicated in the beating up of the pupil," she said.

Mboxela said the department has suspended the school principal and launched a full-scale investigation to determine the full scope of wrongdoing and ensure accountability at all levels.

"The department assures the public that it is committed to protecting pupils' rights and will take all necessary steps to ensure this type of incident never occurs again."
