PEDESTRIANS warned to stay off highways this Easter weekend as traffic volumes surge across Joburg.
With thousands expected to hit the road, the Joburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) said jay walking, especially on busy highways, could turn deadly in seconds.
JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla said officers will be out in full force targeting risky behaviour.
"Pedestrians are strictly prohibited from jay walking on or crossing freeways. Officers will be deployed to remove and cite individuals endangering themselves on high-speed routes," he said.
The city is bracing itself for large traffic volumes on major roads, with increased foot traffic expected in the inner-city, townships and other busy hubs where accidents are more likely during peak periods.
Authorities said booze remains a major contributor to road fatalities and communal violence during holidays.

"Both motorists and pedestrians are warned that public intoxication significantly increases the risk of fatal accidents," said Fihla.
To tackle this, 24-hour roadblocks will be manned across Joburg to clamp down on drunk driving and reckless behaviour.
The JMPD will also conduct inspections at liquor outlets to ensure strict compliance with trading hours throughout the Easter weekend.
Unlawful street parties and "bashes" that disrupt public peace or block roads will be shut down immediately as part of the operation.
JMPD chief of police commissioner Patrick Jaca has ordered a high-visibility, zero-tolerance approach to law enforcement during this busy period.
Police will also increase patrols at shopping malls, parks and residential areas to deter criminal activity while many residents are away.
Authorities urge both motorists and pedestrians to take responsibility for their safety.
"Be patient, stay sober and remain vigilant," said Fihla.
