POLICE dogs sniffed out illegal gold on Thursday, 28 November 2024.
Tshwane district police commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine said that cops received a tip-off about an illegal mining refinery on a farm in Hoephoep, near Divorosong in Rooivaal, Tshwane.
There was suspicion of illegal activities, and police, supported by a helicopter, were on standby. When law enforcement approached the house, several suspects attempted to flee in different directions.
"The K9 unit was deployed, assisting in apprehending the suspects. One was captured immediately, while three more were found in the bushes with the K9's help.

"Unfortunately, these three suspects were injured by the dogs and treated at a local hospital before being detained," he said.

He said the two suspects are Mozambican nationals.
"What was found was a place that is refining or cleaning up gold sand, pendukas were found including material used to refine the gold sand," he said.
He said four suspects were arrested. Thine said that law enforcement also found dishes used to wash gold and chemicals.
"That area is not mining. We don't have mine of gold or diamonds in the area. We suspect the material was taken from somewhere," he said.
