SOWETO residents want justice for Cwecwe!

The people of Mzansi are furious and heartbroken over the shocking rape of seven-year-old Cwecwe from Matatiele, Eastern Cape, which happened at Bergview College.

Everyone is demanding justice for little Cwecwe.

Her case shines a spotlight on the monster of gender-based violence, femicide, and attacks on women and children that's ripping our society apart and hurts communities nationwide.

Soweto and Greater Joburg residents are joining the worldwide call for tough action against the growing abuse of women, children, and vulnerable groups in South Africa.

This Sunday, 6 April, angry Soweto residents will hold a massive picket.

The protesters will march from all corners of Soweto to Moroka Police Station to hand over their demands.

Mathapelo Ndaba, one of the picket convenors, said the march aims to answer the call for justice for Cwecwe.

She said the picket will tackle the growing problem of gender-based violence in Soweto and all townships, as there's a high number of violent cases happening before our eyes, yet there's no fight back.

The community wants to protect the rights promised in the country's constitution.

"This picket is from all sections of across Soweto townships which have the main aim of creating awareness and encouraging our community to take a firm stand against child- abuse, rape and ill-treatment of women, children, and the vulnerable groups who are facing the wrath of abuse in Soweto, including the country, nationwide.

"As part of the awareness and the demand for action, the picket will be handing over unwavering Memorandum of Demands to the heads of Moroka Police Station, demanding their prompt and diligent attention to GBV cases reported to them.

"It will also include all issues and cases about the hard lack of response of police officers to such sensitive cases," said Ndaba.

She said it's sad that no one has been brought to justice.

"It is horrifying that such a case has not received the attention, but also the sensitivity it deserves, but what is also annoying.

The fact that our government, including all the state apparatus, is only reactive to such terrible incidents.

"There is no plan in place to prevent such incidents from happening, and also, how this cycle of abuse is repetitive.

"Sekwanele manje, and we can't just let those who commit such horrific acts get away with murder," said Ndaba.
