Hlengwa said traffic officers carry the crucial responsibility of protecting and saving lives.

"TAKE firm action against reckless and aggressive drivers."

These were the words of transport deputy minister Mkhuleko Hlengwa during an inspection of traffic officers on Thursday, 20 November.

Hlengwa said traffic officers carry the crucial responsibility of protecting and saving lives.

"Colleagues, I want to be clear. You are not just enforcers of the traffic lamp, but you are also the protectors, and saviors of life.

"Your visibility, integrity, discipline and confidence on the road determine whether a child gets home safely, whether a family makes it to Christmas together, and whether commuters trust the state's presence on the road," said Hlengwa.

He warned that corruption is not only a criminal offence, but it's also a betrayal of public trust and a direct attack on road safety.

As the country gears up for the high-risk festive season, Hlengwa said law enforcement will not operate blindly.

He further urged officers to intensify enforcement in pedestrian health zones and take strong action against jaywalking, emphasising that road safety extends beyond drinking and driving.

"Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable of our road users, and they depend on your vigilance as part of traffic-calming measures, roadblocks and other operations that ensure our constant presence on the roads," he said.

Taximan Fanele Sithole, who was fined for having wrong number plate, told Daily Sun police are doing a great job checking out if motorists comply with the rules of the road.

"This is a good project. As a taxi driver who transports people daily, I must make sure my car is roadworthy for people to arrive safely at their destinations," he said.

Another driver, who was found to be using an unroadworthy car, said the operations assist in curbing road carnage.

"We see horrible accidents daily on our roads and these operations will help us to reach our homes safely," he said.
