TRIBUTES pour in for Nkandla's "Bhejane".

Nkandla in KZN is mourning the untimely loss of its beloved mayor, Mbhekiseni "Bhejane" Biyela.

Biyela (52) who helmed the Inkatha Freedom Party-led Nkandla Local Municipality, home to former president Jacob Zuma, died in the early hours of Monday morning following a short illness.

Biyela took over the mayoral reins from Thami Ntuli after the 2021 local government elections.

Ntuli moved on to serve as the mayor of King Cetshwayo District Municipality before ascending to become the KZN premier earlier this year.

KZN CoGTA MEC Reverand Thulasizwe Buthelezi expressed shock and sadness about Biyela's passing.

"The loss of councillor Biyela is a significant blow to the community, as he was a patriot who prioritised the improvement of lives.

"His commitment to public service was marked by diligence, humility, and dedication to the betterment of rural communities. The sphere of local government is poorer without his leadership and vision, which greatly contributed to the welfare of residents," he said.

MEC Buthelezi commended Biyela's bravery and dedication.

"His contribution to community development and public service will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing and working with him. He was a beacon of hope and a pillar of strength for Nkandla residents," he said.

ANC KZN secretary Bheki Mtolo extended heartfelt condolences from his party.

"We pray to God to grant oMenziwa (Biyela's clan name) strength and comfort during this difficult period. Despite our political differences, we come together to extend our deepest condolences to the IFP," said Mtolo.

Biyela's legacy of commitment and leadership is celebrated even as Nkandla grapples with a profound sense of loss.
