"Many people who were living in this building are not employed."

SOME of the residents who were evicted from a Noordvaal building in Silverton, Tshwane, still live on the streets without homes.

The evicted residents say life is hard as they live on the streets exposed to the cold conditions.

On Thursday, 7 July, Daily Sun published a story with the headline: PICS: 'TLOF TLOF' lands tenants on the streets!"

Some residents sleep outside the building, beside the road, covering themselves with plastics.

The SunTeam visited the residents on Monday, 10 July and found them outside, pleading for help as they were exposed to the cold weather.

According to residents, almost 40 people were evicted, and following that, the owner of the building erected a razor wire to prevent them from entering the building.

Mpumi Masombuka (37) appealed to the City of Tshwane to intervene and help them with shelter.

"We are facing tough times. Many people who were living in this building are not employed and are from far places like Limpopo, which is difficult for them to go back as they are not employed," she said.

Tebogo Malatsi (40) said this building was abandoned for almost 15 years and they've been paying rent to a caretaker who has since disappeared.

"This building looks old and bad. People thought something bad was happening inside it," he said.

Linah Maloba (45) said: "What happened is bad. We lost some of our property."

Strike Thokoane said: "We are not ok, and life is hard. I survive through washing cars."

The SunTeam tried to get the contact numbers and the owner's name without success.

The affected people said that they only know the building owner as John and don't have his contact numbers, and don't know his surname.

The security guard guarding the building said they didn't have the owner's contact details.

City of Tshwane spokesman Lindela Mashigo said: "People who need shelter should approach the city's shelters to seek accommodation."

He said some of the shelters the city is involved with are from seven regions.

The city has shelters for the homeless in Region 1, Life Changing Ministries in Karenpark in Region 4, and Littleton community centre in Region 3.

In the inner-city, there are the Homeless Upliftment Projects, Youth for Survival, Number 2 Struben Shelter, Tau Village, Gate Centre, Bethesda community centre, Bethesda Ladies Arise, and NG Kerk Arcadia.
