THE body of a man believed to be between 30 and 35 years old was discovered on Thursday, 5 February, in Mahikeng Extension 39 in the North West.
According to provincial police spokesperson Adéle Myburgh, neighbours alerted the police after a foul smell had been coming from the house for several days.
Myburgh told Daily Sun that the body of the deceased was found in an abandoned house in the area.
She said no foul play is suspected at this stage. However, police have opened an inquest docket.
"The owner of the house left it empty, and it's been unoccupied for some time. Long grass is surrounding the house as well," she said.
She added that neighbours decided to investigate after the smell became unbearable.

"They went to look through the window and saw a person lying on the floor who was already decomposed. The police were then called, and an inquest is under investigation," said Myburgh.
Myburgh further told Daily Sun that the deceased appears to have gained access to the house through a window.
"The windows of the house are broken, so we suspect that he gained entry by climbing through one of them. The deceased has not yet been identified," she added.
