AWARD-WINNING choir, Joyous Celebration, is gearing up for their show, which will take place at the Heartfelt Arena in Tshwane on Saturday, 6 July.
Daily Sun went behind the scenes and observed them rehearsing in preparation for the show on Thursday, 4 July. Despite the cold morning, the choir started strong.
The singers and the band united and began with a prayer. Shortly thereafter, they started their warm-ups, which might sound amusing to those unfamiliar with singing. However, according to their co-musical director Mnqobi Nxumalo, these 'funny' warm-ups enhance their vocal quality significantly.

"As much as our muscles are soft tissues, we also train them rigorously. We engage in vocal exercises for about forty minutes to an hour, focusing on breathing, lungs, diaphragm, neck muscles, and tension muscles. These exercises are not solely about vocal improvement; they also help to clear your mind if you're facing any mental challenges. By the time you start singing, your ears are prepared as well," Mnqobi explained.
They released a project on Friday, 28 June, titled 'The First Set', which they will share with their fans on Saturday. One of the altos, Phuluso Thenga, mentioned that they are returning to the basics, which the audience will appreciate.
"This Saturday, we are launching our 28th album, and attendees can expect beautiful music. We are taking people back to the roots of Joyous. We'll deliver the music they adore, the soothing sounds they enjoy. I'm leading a song titled 'Ngizophumelela'," he said.

The choir's director, Dr Lindelani Mkhize, said the show would be transformative. "The essence of the show is what we always do, though it often goes unnoticed. In one album, we might be very serious and musical, while in another, we maintain a standard churchy feel. We are revisiting our approach from Joyous 25, 22, and 19. Come prepared for an experience that will change your life, as you will get to participate and interact. Joyous is renowned for its exquisite production and set design. The team is ready and eager, pouring their hearts into the performance. All Joyous singers are ministers; when they sing, they minister. They understand that a song must resonate with them before it touches the audience," Mkhize added.
