A TRAGIC incident occurred in the Eastern Cape on Monday, 19 May.
This after a 32-year-old woman from Mzamba allegedly placed her kid's body in a suitcase.
She then travelled 30 kilometres to report the death to the police.
Witness describes woman's arrival
A witness said the woman arrived at the cop shop dragging the suitcase.
"When asked what was inside the bag, she said it was her three-year-old child's body.
"She said she left the child alone at home, and when she returned, she found the child dead."
The witness said when asked about her village, the woman said she lives in Mzamba, which is over 30km away from the Mbizana Police Station.
"She said she put the child in the suitcase and took a taxi to the police station," he said.
Police confirm arrest
Police spokesman Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli confirmed the incident. He said the cops arrested a 32-year-old woman in connection with the death of her three-year-old daughter on Monday, 19 May.
"It's alleged that the suspect placed the child's body in a suitcase and took a taxi from Mzamba to the Mbizana Police Station, covering a distance of approximately 30 kilometres, where she then reported the death," he said.
Shocking allegations of neglect and court appearance
Nkohli said, based on police records, that the suspect left her toddler unattended at home in Mzamba on Sunday, 18 May, to visit her boyfriend.
"Upon her return the following day (Monday, 19 May), she claimed to have found the child unresponsive near the door.
"Instead of seeking immediate medical or police assistance, she allegedly concealed the body in a suitcase and travelled to Mbizana.
"She was subsequently arrested after presenting the suitcase at the police station," Nkohli said.
He said the woman will appear in the Mbizana Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 21 May.
She's facing charges of culpable homicide, child neglect and defeating the ends of justice.
