A GOGO was mauled to death by pit bulls at her house in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town on Tuesday night, 28 March.
According to Councillor Angus Mckenzie, the pit bulls jumped from their yard into gogo Olga Grill's yard and attacked the 88-year-old, who was home alone.
A woman from Bonteheuwel, who saw what happened, said the dogs ripped off gogo's arm and leg from her body.
Mckenzie said an inquest docket has been opened.
Wayne Dyason, spokesman of the city's law enforcement department, said they received a complaint about the incident around 6.30pm.
"When officers arrived on the scene, they found that an 88-year-old woman had been attacked by two dogs from a neighbouring property. The lady was fatally injured in the attack and had already died when the officers arrived.
"The dogs, both pit bulls, were surrendered by the owner and taken to the SPCA in Grassy Park," said Dyason.
SPCA spokeswoman Belinda Abraham said the dogs were impounded by law enforcement and admitted into the care of the SPCA.
"We don't know the circumstances of the attack, but we are deeply saddened by this incident, which we feel once again highlights the need for the development and implementation of stronger regulation legislation with regards to the keeping and breeding of power breeds," said Abraham.
Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk said Bishop Lavis confirmed the incident.
"According to reports, Bishop Lavis SAPS members attended to the scene where a female was attacked by pit bulls. Circumstances surrounding this fatal incident are under investigation.
"At this stage, no foul play is suspected," he said.
