The early bird catches the worm.

WORKERS need to be paid the day before Black Friday, so they don't miss out on big deals.

This petition has been making the rounds on social media, but not everybody agrees.

Mzansi is only two weeks away from the much-anticipated Black Friday, and many may be unable to afford to buy big during that time.

As a result, sales director for One Day Only, Laurain Venter, has launched an online petition encouraging employees to push for early payment to stock up on groceries and those goods they've been eyeing all year.

"We know that when it comes to Black Friday, the early bird catches the worm, and with many South Africans living paycheque to paycheque, it would be a shame for them to miss out. Although payday is governed by the Basic Conditions of Employment Act (BCEA), employers have some 'wiggle room'," Venter said.

However, only some people are excited about the day.

"Early salary or not, we can't afford it; life now is more expensive, and we don't have the money to splurge as we would have back then. I won't even participate," Maria Ratsaka (50) from Tembisa in Ekurhuleni said.

She feels they are no longer saving on Black Friday.

Nodumo Sigola (39) and Khanyisile Tshile (50), also from Tembisa, said they will not participate this year.

"Things are no longer the same, and we just got out of Covid. Many people lost their jobs and had to fiddle with their savings. Now that we're working, we're putting back money in those accounts again, so this year, on Black Friday," she said.

While Black Friday may be good, Standard Bank chief risk officer Thabani Ndwandwe said people getting paid early could have a huge risk in their pockets.

"Customers could find themselves not having sufficient money left over to service their debit orders or buy food and pay rent," he said.

Thabani has cautioned consumers not to be tempted to buy things outside of their affordability, or they didn't budget for just because they are on sale.

"The economic environment remains tough, and one must guard against over-extending themselves," he said.
