THE South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has finally taken a hard stance against corruption.
This comes after firing five officials caught up in a shocking fraud case at its Joburg Office.
The disciplinary action follows the 2025 arrests of eight officials at the 1 De Villiers Street office on fraud-related charges.
While five officials have been dismissed, the other three await verdicts from presiding officers.
The criminal case is ongoing.
The Joburg office was temporarily closed from 15 September 2025 while Sassa beefed up its systems to stop fraud right in its tracks.
During the closure, alternative arrangements were put in place to make sure beneficiaries didn't go without their essential social grants.

Staff and services were redeployed to key sites across the city.
Sassa CEO Themba Matlou made it clear the agency is serious about stamping out wrongdoing.
"The dismissal of five officials implicated in this matter sends a clear and unequivocal message that Sassa will not tolerate fraud or corruption in any form. Accountability is non-negotiable, and any official found guilty of misconduct will face decisive consequences," said Matlou.
"We remain committed to strengthening our systems to protect public resources and uphold the integrity of the Agency."
He also thanked the public for their patience.
"We extend our sincere appreciation to our stakeholders, clients, and the broader community for their patience and understanding during the period when the office was temporarily closed.
"The Joburg Local Office is now fully operational, and we look forward to continuing to serve beneficiaries with efficiency, dignity, and professionalism."
Sassa reminded the public all its services are free and urged anyone aware of fraud or corruption to report it immediately.
