Suddenly, the police noticed a grey Mercedes-Benz without registration numbers driving at a high speed.

TWO men have been shot and killed, while one was hospitalised not far from Zamdela Police Station in Sasolburg in the Free State in the early hours of Saturday morning, 19 August 2023.

The incident happened in the parking area of a shisa nyama in Zamdela at about 1.55am.

According to Free State police spokeswoman Sergeant Josephine Rani, a 33-year-old suspect has been arrested for double murder and attempted murder.

What happened

Rani told Daily Sun the police were patrolling near Kwa Nduna shisa nyama at about 1.55am when they heard gunshots and people screaming.

"Suddenly, the police noticed a grey Mercedes-Benz without registration numbers driving at a high speed from the direction where the gunshots came from and police gave chase to the suspicious vehicle until it stopped," she said.

According to Rani, an unknown man stepped out of the vehicle carrying a firearm and the police managed to disarm him.

"Police returned to the crime scene and conducted a preliminary investigation, which revealed that the suspect was spinning his vehicle and randomly firing shots through the driver's window, which led to three unknown males being shot at," she said.

Tragedy after shooting

One of the three victims died at the scene, while the second victim succumbed to his injuries in hospital and the third victim is still in the hospital receiving medical treatment.

Tshepiso Khomonngoe (55), the parent of the victim who is still in hospital, told the SunTeam he got a call at about 2am that his son Sello Aame (27) has been shot at the shisa nyama. He said when he arrived, he found his son with four bullets holes in his legs - two on the left and two on the right.

Tshepiso said he was told his son, an assistant teacher together with his friend who is a primary school teacher, had an argument with a patron. This was after the patron allegedly bumped into the car they were travelling in.

"When they tried to talk to the man, asking him why he had bumped their car, the man didn't say anything. Instead, he took out the gun and shot the teacher in the head, my son with four bullets on the legs. They were transferred to the Bloemfontein hospital," said Tshepo.

Suspect faces the music

Sergeant Rani said the suspect will appear before the Sasolburg Magistrates Court on Monday, 21 August 2023 on charges of murder, attempted murder, discharge of a firearm in a municipal area, handling of the firearm while under the influence and reckless and negligent driving.
