Mpumalanga Premier Mandla Ndlovu said the operation aims to ensure that only legitimate products are sold in businesses.
“Those that are not supposed to go on our shelves, we are removing them,” Ndlovu said.
He added that business owners who dispute the confiscation of goods would be given an opportunity to engage with the relevant officials, who he said have the expertise to distinguish between counterfeit and genuine products.
Ndlovu was speaking during Operation Shanela 2 in Mbombela on Friday, 18 September, where police and other law enforcement agencies conducted inspections across the city.
Police confiscated illicit alcohol from several liquor outlets, with the seized goods estimated to have a street value of more than R300 000.
