The stage is set for a blockbuster 2026 FIFA World Cup final as European champions Spain take on defending world champions Argentina in the tournament’s 104th and final match at New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday, 19 July.
Both nations have produced outstanding campaigns to reach football’s biggest stage, with Spain chasing their second World Cup title and Argentina aiming to become the first team in more than six decades to successfully defend the trophy.
Spain booked their place in the final with an impressive 2-0 victory over France in the semi-finals. Luis de la Fuente’s side dominated one of the tournament favourites, controlling possession and limiting Les Bleus to very few clear-cut opportunities.

La Roja’s journey to the final began with a goalless draw against surprise package Cabo Verde before they bounced back in style with convincing victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay to finish top of Group H.
They eased past Austria 3-0 in the Round of 32 before edging Portugal 1-0 thanks to a late Mikel Merino winner. The Arsenal midfielder once again proved decisive in the quarter-finals, scoring another late goal in a 2-1 win over Belgium.
Spain then produced arguably its best performance of the tournament to eliminate France and secure its first World Cup final appearance since lifting the trophy in South Africa in 2010.
Argentina, meanwhile, have once again shown the resilience that made them world champions in Qatar. Lionel Scaloni’s men topped Group J after victories over Algeria, Austria and Jordan, with Lionel Messi leading the way in front of goal.
The knockout rounds, however, tested the Albiceleste’s character. They survived a thrilling 3-2 encounter against Cabo Verde before producing one of the greatest comebacks of the tournament against Egypt, overturning a two-goal deficit late in the match to win 3-2.
Argentina then overcame Switzerland in the quarter-finals before another dramatic fightback saw them defeat England 2-1 in the semi-finals. With Argentina trailing after Anthony Gordon’s opener, Enzo Fernandez equalised with a stunning long-range strike before substitute Lautaro Martinez headed home the winner in stoppage time.
With Spain’s possession-based football going up against Argentina’s grit, experience and never-say-die attitude, Sunday’s final promises to be a fitting finale to an unforgettable FIFA World Cup. For Spain, it is a chance to reclaim the trophy after 16 years, while Argentina will be determined to cement their place in history by retaining football’s biggest prize.
