SHOWMAX streaming service is set to shut down after MultiChoice Group's board decided to axe the platform following a review.
The video-on-demand platform launched in South Africa on 19 August 2015 as one of Africa's first major subscription streaming services.
Showmax was created to compete with international streaming giants such as Netflix, offering a mix of locally produced African content and popular international shows and films. Over the years, it expanded across the continent and became known for showcasing African storytelling.
Despite its growth and popularity, MultiChoice has confirmed the service will be discontinued as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital offerings.
In a message sent to subscribers, the company said the decision was made after careful consideration.
"We're writing to inform you of an important update regarding Showmax. Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future," the company said.
MultiChoice explained the move is part of its long-term strategy to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving streaming industry.

"This decision reflects our focus on strengthening our overall digital offering and ensuring long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming environment," the statement added.
The company reassured subscribers that the service will continue to operate as normal for now. Customers will still be able to access their favourite content without interruption while further plans are developed.
"Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time," the company said.
MultiChoice also acknowledged the announcement may raise concerns among viewers and promised to provide clear communication in the coming months.
"We understand this news may raise questions. Showmax subscribers are a priority for us, and we're working on plans to ensure clear communication and a smooth transition when the time comes," the statement said.
The company emphasised streaming remains a key part of its business strategy.
"Streaming remains central to our strategy. We will continue to invest in premium content, technology innovation and partnerships to deliver the best possible entertainment experience to our customers," the statement added.
