The 12th annual Savanna Comics’ Choice Comedy Awards were held at The Lyric Theatre on Saturday night, 12 April

COMEDY fraternity comes together.

The 12th annual Savanna Comics' Choice Comedy Awards were held at The Lyric Theatre, south of Joburg, on Saturday night, 12 April, to celebrate Mzansi comedy.

Nina Hastie and Carvin H Goldstone hosted the event, which turned out to be a comedy show. Each winner had five minutes to prove why they won.

Khanyisa Jam Jam kicked off the night by winning the Breakthrough Act of the Year Award.

Robbie Collins took home two awards, including one of the big awards of the night, Headliner of the Year Award and Best Solo Show Award.

A new award was introduced on the night and it was a category chosen by comedians who've won before.

Sifiso Nene walked away with the award for Winners' Choice Award.

The Innovative Comedy Performance Award went to Céline Tshika and Sauce of the Year Award, presented by Mrs Balls, was won by Noko Mashaba.

The EB Award was won by Khanyisile Ngwenya.

After four years of being nominated for the Joe Mafela Award, King Flat finally took it home, while actress and comedian Celeste Ntuli walked away with the big award of the night, Comedian of the Year.

Kayla Hendricks, marketing communication manager for Savanna Premium Cider, said they will continue supporting comedians.

"Twelve years of backing the boldest punchlines in the land and we're still laughing (and crying… from laughing). We truly believe in the power of humour to unite South Africans, shine a light on life's absurdities and keep the national gees alive - one dry joke and crisp cider at a time," said Kayla Hendricks.

"It's an honour to be more than a sponsor, but a proud custodian of comedy culture in South Africa. Here's to another year of comedy gold, unforgettable one-liners and helping the next generation of comedic legends take the mic."

The awards will air on Comedy Central on 26 May and the repeat on 31 May.
