"IT'S important to know who we are."

These were the words of media personality and entrepreneur Mondli Makhoba, who strongly believes that television should educate and entertain the next generation while preserving African culture and heritage.

Best known for his standout roles on The Wife and Shaka iLembe, the 47-year-old actor has become a vocal advocate for TV shows that authentically tell African stories.

Mondli emphasised that storytelling is more than entertainment because it's a crucial tool for teaching people about their roots, traditions, and ancestors.

Speaking to Daily Sun, Mondli stressed the impact television has on shaping perceptions and knowledge.

"I think it's incredibly important because today, many kids and even adults, learn by watching TV. That's why whoever tells these stories must conduct thorough research. People believe what they see on TV, so it has to be accurate. We learnt so much from our elders, and now, when we see these things represented on TV, we can connect the dots and understand what they were teaching us," he said.

Mondli believes that TV has the ability to bridge generational gaps, helping young people appreciate the wisdom of their ancestors.

He urged filmmakers and producers to take responsibility in ensuring that the African narrative is told with authenticity and depth.

Mondli, who plays a significant role in Shaka iLembe, described the show as more than just a historical drama because of its deeply spiritual experience.

"This show is spiritual. It's not just about talent, but about destiny. Everything I've been through in life led me to this moment. When preparing for this character, I open myself to the spiritual world, understanding that our people should connect with the role I'm portraying," he said.

The show has been widely praised for its historical depth and cultural accuracy, with audiences appreciating its effort to depict African history in a dignified manner.

Mondli hopes that productions such as Shaka iLembe inspire more African filmmakers to explore their heritage with pride.

Beyond historical accuracy, Mondli believes language and cultural representation in media should remain pure and unaltered.

"The message is simple: know who we are and keep it clean. That includes our appearance, the way we speak, and how we preserve our languages. We should expand and embrace our identity rather than dilute it. Too often, I watch TV and hear people speaking isiZulu in English. We need to respect our languages and not take our heritage for granted," he said.

Through his work, Mondli hopes to inspire Africans to take pride in their identity, ensuring that future generations remain connected to their rich cultural heritage.
