DEPRESSION has taken the lives of many South African celebs such as Riky Rick, HHP and Patrick Shai.

Gospel singer Bucy Radebe was almost part of that statistic.

The Uzugcin'impiloYam' hitmaker struggled with severe depression in 2022 and 2023 after surgery went wrong and almost took her life.

The 35-year-old singer from Soshanguve in Tshwane spoke to Daily Sun about the past two years and why she tried to commit suicide four times.

"The years 2022 and 2023 were the toughest years of my life. Depression hit me very hard because of a surgery I underwent in 2021.

"I had surgery where I had to remove fibroids, and the surgery went horribly wrong. The surgeon removed my ovaries and fallopian tubes without my consent," she said.

As a result, Bucy said she can't have kids anymore, and that's what led to her wanting to take her life.

"I can't have kids naturally. I don't even go through menstruation. I suffer from severe depression because of that. I tried in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), but it wasn't a success. My faith was tested a lot, and that's why I tried taking my life many times," Bucy said.

The singer said God saved her every time she tried taking her life, and she's in a good space now.

"I still get emotional when I think about how God saved me. He told me I wasn't born to suffer like this. It wasn't supposed to happen like this, but He will replace and restore everything I have gone through, and I know He will.

"At this moment, I'm in my writing season, and I'm writing about my encounter with God during this tough time. I'm here because of God's love for me," she said.

Did you know?

  • A woman cannot get pregnant naturally after her fallopian tubes and ovaries are surgically removed through a procedure called bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy (BSO).
  • The ovaries are responsible for producing eggs (ova) and releasing them into the fallopian tubes, where fertilisation typically occurs. Without ovaries, eggs cannot be produced, and without fallopian tubes, there is no pathway for the egg to travel from the ovary to the uterus for fertilisation.
  • However, it's important to note that even if a woman undergoes a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), but her ovaries are left intact, she may still experience hormonal changes associated with menopause, but she won't be able to conceive naturally as there is no uterus for the fertilised egg to implant and develop.
  • In cases where a woman wishes to become pregnant after the removal of her ovaries and fallopian tubes, options such as egg donation and surrogacy may be considered. In egg donation, eggs from a donor are fertilised with sperm in a laboratory and then implanted into the uterus of the intended mother or a surrogate. Surrogacy involves implanting a fertilised embryo into the uterus of a surrogate who carries the pregnancy to term on behalf of the intended parents. These methods allow women who cannot conceive naturally to still experience pregnancy and childbirth.
