“This is exciting for us because it is an opportunity to make a big contribution."

RUNNERS can expect to pay less for the Soweto Marathon.

This after African Bank partnered with the Soweto Marathon. The popular race is now known as the African Bank Soweto Marathon.

On Thursday, 12 October, the Soweto Marathon 2023 race T-shirt was launched at the African Bank offices in Midrand, Gauteng.

Speaking during the T-shirt reveal event, chief marketing officer at African Bank Sbusiso Khumalo said that they're the main sponsor for the Soweto Marathon, and this is their first year being a title sponsor.

"This is exciting for us because it's an opportunity to make a big contribution to a race that's so special to South Africans. The decision to partner with the Soweto Marathon came about after we saw the relationship we had with the marathon. This was also after we enhanced the race and the contribution we made," he said.

Khumalo said with African Bank being close to Soweto, they felt it was necessary to step up and cooperate to ensure that the race could happen.

"It would have been sad to see such a thing connected to our heritage not happening because of the lack of funding," said Khumalo.

He said their view is to be a long-term partner with the Soweto Marathon.

Khumalo said runners can expect to pay less as they've cut down the cost of running and have also worked with some the logistical issues that runners have complained about in terms of the watering points.

Race director for Soweto Marathon Danny Bloumberg said about 15 000 runners have so far registered for the race.

Organisers are hoping to have 30 000 runners or even more.

The marathon will take place on Sunday, 5 November at Soccer City in Nasrec, Soweto.
