A GOBELA allegedly told his rape victims that his muthi will protect him from being arrested.
It's alleged that he told the three victims aged 14, 15 and 18 that his muthi is very strong. He allegedly claimed it made him untouchable, such that even the police wouldn't be able to touch him.
But it looks like those were just the threatening tactics the 31-year-old gobela from Ulundi, northern KZN, used when he allegedly raped the thwasas.
How the horror started
According to a family member of one of the victims (15), the gobela allegedly started raping them on separate occasions when they arrived at his house earlier this year.
She said he would give them two beers each, dagga and even vodka.
"When they were drunk, he would then rape them. My niece told me that on one occasion she thought she was dreaming that he was on top of her raping her. But she realised that in fact she wasn't dreaming, and the gobela was really raping her. She tried to push him away, but he strangled her and continued raping her," she said.
The threats that followed
She said her niece told her that he threatened them so they don't report him to the police.
"He threatened that he would make them suffer and not be able to become professional izangoma if they reported him. He went as far as threatening to kill them. So, they were afraid and kept quiet. But my niece couldn't take it anymore and reported this to our family. We then went to the police station, and he was arrested," he said.
She said he has ruined their lives and one of the thwasas is allegedly pregnant with his child.
"We trusted that he was a genuine sangoma but clearly he fooled all of us," she said.
Gobela faces the music
Now he is waiting for his day in court as he was caught and arrested on Friday, 8 September by the same cops he claimed would never touch him.
He faces three counts of rape and will be appearing in the Mahlabathini Magistrates Court soon.
KZN police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Nqobile Gwala said the Ulundi cops have arrested a 31-year-old man in connection with the rape of three teenagers earlier this year.
"The suspect is expected to appear in court soon. The matter is being investigated by the Ulundi family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit," said Gwala.
