ALEXANDRA pupils are learning to turn their ideas into businesses through a programme started by Proteas cricket captain Temba Bavuma’s foundation.
The pupils from St David’s Marist Inanda Alexandra Campus, north of Joburg recently took part in the Future Founders Challenge, run by the Temba Bavuma Foundation in partnership with Empowered Futures.
The programme teaches youngsters about starting a business and managing money. As part of the Soap-to-Startup: Build a Business in a Box challenge, pupils worked in teams to come up with products and business ideas. They later presented their ideas to a panel of judges, giving them a chance to show what they’d learnt.
The programme is part of the foundation’s work to give young people from communities like Alex more opportunities to develop their skills.
The foundation also recently supported the Temba Tigers U12 team, which took part in the St David’s Marist Inanda cricket festival.

The team’s participation gave the young players a chance to develop their cricket skills and learn about teamwork, discipline and confidence.
The activities come as the foundation celebrates 10 years of helping young people through education, sport, and community projects.
Founded by Bavuma in 2016, the foundation has supported pupils with their education, helped young cricketers develop, and offered mentorship. It’s also been involved in community food support and school lunchbox campaigns.
Bavuma said he was proud of what the foundation had achieved over the past decade.
“Looking back on the past 10 years, I’m proud of what the foundation has been able to achieve, from supporting learners through education and developing young cricketers to creating opportunities for young people to explore entrepreneurship,” he said.
Bavuma added that the foundation wanted to reach more young people and continue giving them opportunities to shape their futures.
